Hand-Drawn Portraits, Live Portrait Sketches & Private Art Lessons

by Kara Williamson

Artist Statement

Kara has been engaged in the arts ever since she was a young child, but her passion for portraits began in early middle school, which was an artistic way of expressing her affinity for popular celebrities pictured in magazines. In high school, the beautiful black and white photography from fashion magazines inspired her to try and capture the personality and attitude that emanated from the models. Each time she completed a portrait, her skills improved rapidly, getting more and more realistic. It was in those times that she realized she had a gift for capturing the human face, and the personality behind it.

When Kara draws portraits, she doesn't just recreate the photograph in front of her - something magical happens.  Her talent allows her to tap into the emotion, energy, and personality of every subject. There is a bond created with each face that she translates onto paper. She describes her process as a meditative state, in which her mind, hand and spirit intertwine, and her understanding of the subjects energies are reproduced onto the paper, almost effortlessly. The majority of the time, her clients compliment her work as, "Looking better than the photograph."

Aside from her portrait work, Kara teaches private art lessons to children, and leads therapeutic art activities at a counseling center in Lebanon, TN. She also attends festivals and special events to draw Live portraits, which take about 20 minutes each. These events include Tomato Fest 2014, Charlie Daniels Park, Relay for Life, and Opryland's "Treasures for the Holidays." Her newest offering is for Weddings, to draw the Bride and Groom's special moment (from a snapshot) during the reception as a form of entertainment for the guests, and a forever keepsake for the Newlyweds. Also, she offers "QUICK SKETCHES" from your photographs, which take only a day to complete, and make great gifts for friends,  or unique memorabilia for the home and office.
